What is a Niche? Why is Choosing a Niche Important for Freelance Writers?
According to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fifth Edition, a niche is “A situation or activity specially suited to a person’s interests, abilities, or nature: found her niche in life. b. A special area of demand for a product or service…”
In freelance writing, your niche is your specific area of expertise, most commonly a specific topic (and/or a specific type of writing).
Why niche down? There’s an old marketing adage that says if you try to appeal to everybody…you end up appealing to nobody. It’s true for writing as well. Niching down allows you to serve a particular audience, using your unique skills, interests, and experiences.
What to Consider While Choosing Between Freelance Writing Niches
It’s also worth highlighting a few things you should consider while choosing your own niche.
Experience & Passion
First, consider your background and interests.
What is your professional background? What do you know a lot about already? Do you have any work experiences, educational qualifications, and pertinent hobbies you can write about? What opportunities or connections exist within your network? It’s important to consider these factors when choosing your freelance writing niche.
But it isn’t just about your professional background either. What do you enjoy? What are you passionate about? Is there something you could you talk about all day long if given the chance? It’s important to choose something you actually enjoy and want to share with others. If you think computer software is the most boring topic in the world, don’t write about technology, for example. 🙂
Profitability & Demand
From a business standpoint, however, passion and experience aren’t enough by themselves. It’s also important to consider profitability and demand, which may require a little research on your part.
For starters, determine how much writers usually get paid within the niche. Does the industry pay enough to make it worth your effort?
Also, what kinds of writing within that niche pay well? Are you equipped to deliver quality work that matches a potential client’s needs? Is there enough demand for this particular freelance writing niche that will provide a steady stream of work, at least for a period of time?
Ultimately, you want to consider what sets YOU apart from your competition, and choose a niche that naturally fits you, while also taking profitability factors into account.
We hope this list has given you some ideas for narrowing down your own freelance writing niches.
